A year in (sporadic) blogging

I did this at the end of last year and it was pretty entertaining; so I thought I'd give it another go.

Here's a bloggish way to summarize your year: go back through the past year's entries and show us the first line of

YBS

the first (public) post in each month. Now you have a twelve-sentence snapshot of what you thought was worth blogging about in 2009.

January: I just saw a headline that reads, "Merle Haggard has kicked the pot habit."
February: We are not allowed to play Monopoly in my house anymore.
March: And if you know me at all, you know I don't like snow. Ever.
April: So I've decided I need to voice this out loud (or at least through typed words) because I've that admitting the problem is the first step towards recovery.
May: I really hate comic sans font, and any adult who uses this font to produce email, memos, or any other form of important document should be shot on sight.
June: When I was 21, I bought my very first new car.
July: Last week was a rather emotional week for me, so when my dad called and asked if we wanted to go camping for the 4th, I jumped at the opportunity.
August: Natalie has stepped away from Vox and will return when her life ceases to be a massive pile of grownup busy work.
September: The children started school today, and as you can see, everyone was thoroughly excited.
October: I saw Regina Spektor at The Tabernacle in Atlanta last night.
November: Sitting in class today, watching my students work on their final group projects, I heard a loud sort of bang just outside our building.
December: Teaching evaluations were released today for us to read.

If you read January through May like you're reading a story, it's pretty entertaining.

Hmmm...I guess this mash up is ok. I seem to get more and more boring as the year progresses.

Notes on the Teacher

Teaching evaluations were released today for us to read. The evaluations consist of questions pertaining to my teaching ability, the benefits of the course being taught, and the importance of the course to the student's overall college experience. Most of it is a rating thing, as in "very much" or "not at all." That stuff is boring to wade through. But the comments the students get to leave...well, those are always interesting.

Here are some of my favorites:

She had no kryptonite that I was aware of. So yeah, no weakness.
Crazy people on sticks. [Editor's Note: What the hell?]
Natalie is the most crazy hair-brained hay-wired insane teacher I've had in a long time. She was quite pleasant also.
She's awesome, enough said.
The fact that she used a Mac was very valuable. Mac's are awesome. Huzzah! Also awesome? Her sarcastic tone.
Natalie is a wonderful person although a little crazy.
This class was my favorite this semester (and I am not an English person, I am a math person).
Taught well. Smoking hot.
Natalie's weakness is that she doesnt teach ALL of my classes (Math, Science, etc.)
She kicks ass.
The best English instructor I've ever had. Hands Down.

The 7-Year-Old Sadist

When I walked into Madelyn's school yesterday, she was sitting in the office looking rather unhappy. When I asked the teacher what was up, she insisted that Mad tell me what she'd done.

Maddy: Well, mom, Cooper called me a pinhead, so I called him an asshole.

Me: You did what?

Maddy: I called him an asshole.

I quickly gathered up her things, along with Evie's, and shoved her out the door. In the car, we continued our conversation.

Me: Mad, you can't call Cooper an asshole.

Maddy: But he is one, mom. He's one of the meanest kids I know. I couldn't think of another word to describe him.

This goes on for a while, until her dad gets home and I tell him what she did. After some arguing about the proper form of punishment, we both explain to Madelyn why she can't go around calling kids "bad" names and explain what will happen next time she does it.

Today, when we all got home from school, I'm sitting with Madelyn at the kitchen table, helping her with homework. She's in a rotten mood.

Me: What's up kid? What's with the attitude?

Maddy: I had a bad day.

Me: Why?

Maddy: I couldn't be myself.

Me: Why couldn't you?

Maddy: Because you told me I couldn't be mean to anybody.

Me: This is good. It's just different than Star Wars.

After 34 years of marriage, my parents got divorced today. It took them a year and a half to get to the point where they could stand in front of a judge to tell them their marriage was over. Furniture has been divided. The house is being sold. And signatures are on the dotted line. It seems silly to me that these are the things to fight over. Furniture. A couch. An end table. That picture hanging in the hallway. After 34 years, these are the things worth arguing over, worth fighting furiously for.

I'd like to think that after 34 years I'd fight for things like that hour of sleep I lost in year 4 when I had to hold a wet compress to the back of his neck while he was vomiting. Or the time I wasted in year 17 when he ran over that whatever on the interstate and tore all the tires to shreds, making me have to wait for over 2 hours in the car with him on a tow truck. Or that 10 pounds I gained in year 28 when we traveled Europe for several weeks, eating only the best food we could find and strolling happily through museums and churches.

These are the things I would fight for. These are the things that defined the last 34 years. Who gives a shit about an ottoman.
