When I was 21, I bought my very first new car. Up to that point, I drove a Toyota 4Runner handed down to me by my dad. But when she started to go, I decided it was time to be a grown up of sorts and buy a car for myself. I couldn't afford much, so I decided to go with Saturn. I bought a red 3-door coupe and named her Sally. And I loved her dearly. When the children came along, I had to upgrade to a bigger vehicle, (actually, I went too big and have since downsized) but I never got rid of Sally. I'd drive her when I didn't have to haul kids around, or when I just wanted to remember what it was like to be a little sporty.
When we moved to Clemson, I knew it would be Sally's last trip with us. The older we get, the bigger the children get, and the more used Sally becomes just made it necessary to realize she couldn't be a traveling car any more.
So, last Thursday, we put her on Craig's List. On Friday a guy called asking about her. On Sunday he and his teenage daughter came over to test drive her. And today that teenager handed me her hard earned cash and drove my first new car home to be her very first car ever. I am really glad a teenage girl bought Sally. She was so excited and proud of herself, and I knew since she's worked so hard to buy her first car, she'd take good care of it.
But the best thing about the deal? She decided to keep calling the car Sally, which I think is perfect.
I hope Sally is as good to her as she was to me.
(Jesus Christ, I'm getting old. I just wrote a post about a freakin' car.)
